Pro 2:1  My [children], if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments  (16-19)… you will be delivered from the forbidden [person], from the adulterer with [their] smooth words,  who forsakes the companion of [their] youth and forgets the covenant of [their] God;  for [their] house sinks down to death, and [their] paths to the departed;  none who go to [them] come back, nor do they regain the paths of life.

I have rephrased this scripture as it is applicable to both men and women. This passage of scripture warns us of the consequence of adultery. Proverbs has a lot to say on the subject of adultery particularly in the first couple of chapters.

Adultery Defined

  • Adultery according to Jesus would be any sexual activity between two people where no covenant of marriage exists.(Matt 5:28)

It is destructive to us personally

  • Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. 1Co 6:18(NIV)

It is destructive to those around us

  • The ‘light of innocence’ is lost in our spouse, our children & our friends and family.

It is destructive to those with whom we commit adultery

  • 1Co 6:16  Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.”
  • You become one flesh with a person you have no covenant with. Any union where no covenant exists is highly destructive

It is destructive when we cause others to commit adultery even internally

  • Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they come. It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. So watch yourselves. Luk 17:1-3
  • Provoking a sexual response in others even if there is no intention of following through with the act is destructive.
    • Sexual innuendos
    • Sexually provocative clothing (ladies take care what you wear)

The Cure is Christ

  • Jesus is the cure if you turn away from adultery.
  • We see how Jesus forgave and healed the adulterer. This forgiveness and healing is available to you if you have committed adultery.
  • But please remember, that while we can walk in God’s forgiveness, it is very difficult to undo the consequence of adultery.
  • Also remember that if we continue to commit adultery, God will judge us.
    • Another thing you do: You flood the Lord’s altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer pays attention to your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands. You ask, “Why?” It is because the Lord is acting as the witness between you and the wife of your youth, because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant. Mal 2:13-14 (NIV)
